Bose SoundTube Earbuds
Context
I created this project both as a passion and for the Render Weekly (RW) Instagram challenge. I've always been interested in wireless earbuds, even before working in the audio industry. To me, they’re fascinating because they combine art, engineering, and human factors. They pack so many technologies like speakers, batteries, and chipsets into a tiny space, while also needing to fit comfortably in the ears and look good.
The theme for this week’s RW challenge was “Earbuds,” and the deadline was two weeks away. I realized I only had about 30 minutes to an hour each day to work on it, which I thought would be enough. Since this is just a fun challenge with no prize, I wanted to keep things light and easy but still make something unique and interesting.
I really like the knurled pattern and want to use it in this design both as a visual signature and to improve grip. I know it might not be necessary to use the pattern on that part of the earbuds, but as I said before, I want to keep things fun and use it as a chance to practice creating parametric patterns in Grasshopper.
When worn, most of the earbuds are hidden inside the ear, leaving only a small area visible from the outside. That’s why it’s important to make the most of this visible surface for both branding and looks. To achieve this, I added a radial finish that creates a strong focal point by subtly reflecting light.
Exploring digital CMF is always fun, so I’d like to present it in an engaging way, just like we do with physical parts during design reviews.
For this concept, I picture the earbud’s main material as anodized aluminum. I experimented with dual-anodizing techniques to create a contrast between the primary and accent colors.
For the charging case, I wanted to keep it simple and clean, keeping the spotlight on the earbuds. So, I chose a beadblasted matte finish with subtle laser markings for the details.
Sketch Render in Procreate
With so many AI-generated images around, I find it fun and relaxing to just sit down and sketch by hand, whether on paper or digitally, instead of using prompts.
This timelapse sketch was made in Procreate during a business trip. Whenever I have trouble sleeping on a plane, I take out my iPad and put on headphones. Sketching digitally while flying feels therapeutic and is better than just watching movies. Plus, it helps me keep my skills sharp.
