Bluelounge

Recycled Bags

OVERVIEW

Bags were never part of Bluelounge's DNA. Known for clean, minimal tech accessories, the brand had no template for soft goods, and neither did I. When I was asked to build this category from scratch, I relied on my footwear background, embraced the uncertainty, and taught myself using a sewing machine and extensive iteration.

The core design challenge was creating a system, not just a product. Across five typologies: backpack, tote, messenger bag, laptop sleeve, and iPad sleeve, I developed a shared design language anchored by two vertical seam lines and a horizontal fold line. These intentional details established a subtle coherence aligned with the brand's minimal aesthetic.

Material choices were equally important. Recycled PET fabric was an uncommon but fitting choice for bags in 2012. Paired with recycled aluminum hardware in a consistent matte silver finish, these CMF decisions reinforced the brand's commitment to material integrity. Color was introduced deliberately in three waves: black to test the market, followed by cool light gray, then terracotta—each extending the collection's reach and longevity.

The collection ran for six years, that's the result. The process, stepping confidently into unfamiliar territory and learning while working, has shaped how I approach design ever since.
